Asa improved - June 14, 2014

Asa is improved.  Day started out rough.  Made it through the night staying under the oncology's threshold of an official "fever" of 100.4.  But woke up and promptly spiked well above consistently enough that we had to go in.  We packed our bags and headed to the car  in a whirlwind and the oncologist on call suggested we first stop at a local emergency clinic and if they found anything, that we could escalate to TCH.  We were game, as would be anyone who has ever taken one glance at the TCH ER waiting room.  It's an 8 hour wait in a germfest.  We happily detoured to a local ER.  They were a little baffled by our case coming there, but oncologist guided them through and we did bloodwork which came back great and they gave Asa a broad spectrum IV antibiotic.  Nobody really knows what's wrong, but in cancer patients you cover all bases.  Long story short, we returned home for the afternoon and by late afternoon Asa was eating a Sonic milkshake heartily (he knows what's good), while still running fever.  By late evening he was climbing the walls, hyper, scavenging food off plates and is still wide awake as I type.  He feels cool as a cucumber and we are all hoping he stays this way.  We want to sleep.  Asa needs to sleep.  What caused this?  Dunno.  Likely viral with overall low fever and no real symptoms.

So, the question of the hour is what to do about surgery on a Monday.  We called the magic hospital number and they told us that as long as fever remains low grade or better with no more spikes, that we come in Monday to evaluate and if he still looks good, we proceed.  We would appreciate prayer that this mess stays at bay.  It's a little nerve-wracking for Asa to be ill this close to a major surgery.   Please also pray for our friends and family who have suffered hard losses of late from cancer.  Grief is so hard, even from afar.  Up close, they are in real need of prayer.

Thanks today for all who prayed Asa through this minor bump in the road.  We are very grateful!!  Thanks for crew to hold fort down.  Thanks for Perks and Ice cream and dear ones to share with.  Grateful for hubby who works too hard around here and is an artist in his own right, producing quality craftsmanship in spite of his arthritic joints.  We are spoiled.  Very.
