Out of surgery - June 16, 2014

Asa is out of surgery and in recovery.  He's doing well.  Huge battle scar.  Docs were thrilled with tumor removal.  Tumor was very dead.  The miraculous chemo embolization surgery that Asa had awhile back did the job, the treatment he would not have had if he had not had the adenovirus.  God makes no mistakes.  For tonight, he will stay in ICU for supervision. We expect a few days of his being pretty out of it.

Our strange complicating factor came in a phone call during surgery.  The doc from the ER over the weekend called to tell us that Asa's cultures had come back positive, even though all indicators were initially that it was nothing, though he was treated with an IV antibiotic because that's what you do with chemo patients.  This is a strange unknown and not a good bacteria, a type that likes to stick in central lines sometimes.  As a result, they immediately pulled Asa's central line.  It was already problematic and repaired.  It will be replaced in future with a pic line before final chemos.  Please especially pray for this bacterial issues.  They know what to do to nip it, but not a factor desired at this point.  It is a bit questionable in general. Asa did not present appropriately ill for this and cultures came from another facility.  Those discrepancies present questions about accuracy of the cultures.

Please pray for doc team and ICU team as they deal with all this.  Pray that infection go away (if it's truly there).  Pray for our wisdom as we walk through this and negotiate care with various folks.  Pray for God's provision of right people.  Prayers for troops at home, too.

Thanks today for truly great surgeons.  What a wonderful team!  Grateful for our oncology team who has stood by and not only offered outstanding care, but loves us well.  Thankful for coffee, quiet lunch, visitors, and even God working in the weirdness of it all.
